MADRID, SPAIN — August 10, 2026 — In the space of two weeks, the European energy storage map has been redrawn. First Poland inaugurated a 200 MW facility. Then France's tariff reform took effect. Then Italy's 800 MWh acquisition made headlines. And now, Spain's Ministry of Ecological Transition has awarded 360 million euros (US$415 million) to 1.14 GW of solar PV co-located with battery storage under its RENOINN 2 programme.
The European storage corridor now stretches unbroken from Warsaw to Madrid — and it is accelerating.

Under the RENOINN 2 programme, MITECO allocated 360 million euros across 1.14 GW of co-located solar-plus-storage capacity, as part of a larger 433 million euro package supporting 524 renewable projects with integrated battery storage.
Notable features of the award:
- Co-location is the mandate: every funded project pairs solar PV with battery storage — Spain is no longer funding solar alone
- Innovation hybrids included: agriPV (solar over agriculture) and floating solar projects with storage received dedicated allocations
- Grid resilience framing: the programme is explicitly tied to Spain's grid stability goals, not just renewable capacity targets
The message: Spain is no longer treating storage as an add-on. It is the condition of deployment.
Spain's award completes a remarkable two-week sequence across the continent:
| Country | Event (July-August 2026) | Signal |
|---|---|---|
| Poland | Greenvolt inaugurates 200 MW BESS | First mega-scale project |
| France | Grid tariff reform takes effect (August) | Double-charging removed, 2-3 GW unlocked |
| Italy | OX2 acquires 800 MWh portfolio | International capital flowing in |
| Spain | 360M euros for 1.14 GW co-located storage | Storage now mandatory for solar funding |
Four countries. Four policy or market signals. One direction: Europe's grid is being rebuilt around storage.
The Spanish programme's insistence on co-location reflects a structural insight that is reshaping European procurement:
Solar without storage is now a grid problem. Solar with storage is a solution.
- Midday solar overbuild is collapsing wholesale prices across Iberia — co-located batteries capture that surplus and discharge it into the evening peak
- Grid connection queues reward projects that can modulate their output — storage-enabled projects get prioritized
- Project finance favors co-located assets because they generate revenue across more hours of the day
For equipment suppliers, this means the European market is not just growing in volume — it's growing in sophistication. Every new GW comes with storage attached.
The Spanish award, on top of the Polish, French, and Italian developments, has three concrete implications for BESS suppliers:
- C&I and mid-scale demand follows utility-scale. As utility-scale co-location normalizes, the C&I segment — factories, warehouses, agribusiness — sees the same economics and follows suit. Spain's agriPV allocation is a direct bridge into the C&I agricultural segment.
- Co-location drives inverter and BMS integration complexity. Projects pairing solar inverters with battery systems need proven communication between PV and storage controllers. Suppliers with documented integration (like EXLIPORC's Victron and Deye work) have an edge.
- European stock remains the differentiator. Every one of these programmes accelerates installation timelines. With EU warehouse stock, EXLIPORC's 16kWh 324Ah batteries ship in days, not months — matching the pace European developers now expect.
EXLIPORC's European strategy was built for this corridor: Poland warehouse stock for the north, Thailand and ASEAN hubs for the east, and a product line — from 16kWh residential to 261kWh liquid-cooled C&I — that scales from a villa to a co-located solar park.
The European storage corridor is real, funded, and expanding. The suppliers positioned within it, with local stock and proven integration, are the ones who will serve it.
