Nordic BESS Roundup: Hamburg, Sweden and Finland Advance Large-Scale Storage

A new group of large-scale battery energy storage system announcements shows storage expanding across northern Europe. The developments include a 100MW/400MWh project in Hamburg, a 70MW/260MWh deployment at a Swedish industrial energy park and a 125MW/300MWh project in Finland.

Hamburg project starts construction

Sweden-based battery energy storage platform Flower has started building a 100MW/400MWh project in Bergedorf, Hamburg, Germany. The four-hour system is expected to become Hamburg's largest battery storage facility and one of the largest BESS projects located within a major German city, according to the project announcement.

Construction began with a ceremony on 9 September attended by Katharina Fegebank, Second Mayor of Hamburg and Senator for Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture. Representatives of the project's offtaker and Hamburg Invest also attended.

Flower began in 2024 primarily as an optimiser and virtual power plant platform. It has since expanded its role by developing and operating storage projects designed to demonstrate its long-term optimisation and offtake model. The company also has large-scale projects in Germany and Sweden.

Swedish industrial energy park adds 260MWh

A Swedish commercial-vehicle and industrial-equipment manufacturer plans to deploy 70MW/260MWh of BESS capacity at its Marienstad energy park, where it is developing a battery gigafactory.

The first stage will install large-scale battery storage to support the grid, using storage products developed within the manufacturer's own industrial group. The site will also function as a customer demonstration facility for the group's technologies and support its decarbonisation plans.

The energy park is expected to become operational during 2027. Once online, it is intended to provide additional flexibility and stability to the Swedish electricity market.

Delta Capacity secures Finland tolling arrangement

BESS owner-operator Delta Capacity has entered into a tolling arrangement with Centrica Energy for part of the 125MW/300MWh Karppio project in Teuva, Finland.

Delta Capacity acquired the project together with the Strioga Family Foundation in July 2026. Under the arrangement, Centrica Energy will trade and optimise the asset in the Nordic power market. The company already trades a 160MWh project for Delta Capacity in Sweden.

The Finland project is scheduled to come online in the fourth quarter of 2027.

Three projects, three commercial models

The three announcements point to different routes for making large-scale storage investable. Hamburg combines project development with an offtake structure. Finland uses a tolling arrangement that assigns market trading and optimisation to a specialist counterparty. The Swedish energy park combines grid support, industrial self-use and technology demonstration.

The common thread is that the commercial purpose of the battery is being defined alongside the hardware. In northern Europe, storage projects are increasingly being developed around flexibility needs, trading strategies and industrial decarbonisation plans rather than capacity alone.


WHY IT MATTERS

Northern Europe's storage market is moving beyond simple capacity announcements. Developers are pairing projects with offtakers, trading partners or industrial operating plans before the assets enter service.

That shift changes the procurement test for BESS suppliers. Developers and industrial users need documented specifications, reliable delivery schedules, bankable warranties, safe operating characteristics and communication systems that support market participation. For manufacturers, the ability to provide a clear technical and commercial package can matter as much as the nameplate capacity.

The three projects also show that demand is not limited to one application. Grid flexibility, energy trading, industrial energy management and customer demonstration can all support deployment, depending on the site and revenue structure.
